ABOUT ME.

Hello! I’m Wesley!

I’m currently a DMA student of Performance & Pedagogy at the CU Boulder Imig School of Music, studying under Dr. Sterling Tanner. I received my Bachelor’s degree at Columbus State University under Dr. Bradley Palmer, and my Master’s degree at the University of Central Arkansas under Dr. Justin Cook.

I was born in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in Northwest Georgia, and picked up the trombone in sixth grade at age twelve. I fell in love with the instrument after earning a spot in the Georgia middle school All-State band my seventh grade year. Following our performance of Eric Whittaker’s “Seal Lullaby” under conductor Freddy Martin, I knew I wanted to play the trombone for the rest of my life. Now at age 26, I am thrilled to be following my passion!

As a professional musician, I strive to be equally proficient at performing and teaching. Performing as an orchestral trombonist at a high level is not only something I’m very passionate about, but also something that allows me to be a better teacher. Throughout my time as a student and professional I have performed with a wide range of ensembles, from esteemed groups like the Central City Opera to more service oriented band like the Jordan Kahn Music Company. I have had success competing as well, winning the American trombone Workshop Tenor Trombone Division 3 competition in 2022, placing third in the International Women’s Brass Conference Trombone Division in 2022, and placing as a finalist in the Big 12 Trombone Conference Tenor Trombone competition in 2022. Each of these opportunities have given me valuable experience that I am now able to share with my students. I teach virtual and in-person lessons, and my students have experience a wide range of successes: Placing in the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, placing in the Georgia and Colorado All-State Orchestras, placing in the Georgia and Colorado All-State Jazz Band, earning acceptance in the University of Georgia and University of Central Florida trombone studios, amongst other notable achievements.

Many of you may know me from Instagram! I am overwhelmingly appreciative to everyone who has followed me and my musical journey thus far. For those unaware, my Instagram (@westhetrombonist) is where I showcase my playing abilities, interact with other musicians in the field, and share my daily challenges and successes as I traverse this path as an orchestral musician and educator. I started the account in September of 2019 for the sole purpose of being a digital practice journal for myself and those close to me. Soon after its creation, however, the reach of my account far surpassed my expectations, leading to thousands of fellow musicians following this “digital practice journal” of mine. This account has opened many doors for me, and has lead to countless friendships and experiences I never would’ve had otherwise. Feel free to follow me there and say hello if you haven’t already!
